UT maintains Axis 2100 surveillance cameras in some "Technology Classrooms" on campus. These cameras connect directly to a LAN or the Internet and have a built-in Web Server that streams live video (they can also be easily equipped with audio) at 10 frames/sec. The company, Axis Communications, boasts that "the camera supports multi-user password protection and access is restricted to defined users only. The Administrator has exclusive access to the Administration Tools and can determine the registration and access rights for all users." This secrecy feature has proven handy for UT.
The list of camera locations (below) was archived off a UT technology website before it was removed by UT officials. (Follow the link and see for yourself.) This fits with the University's pattern of secrecy concerning surveillance. The administration has gone to extravagant lengths to avoid disclosing anything about surveillance on campus, going so far as lobbying (successfully) the Texas Legislature for a change in the law that allows UT to keep information on surveillance from the public.
Cameras in classrooms may well serve benign purposes. If so, UT should have no fear in disclosing camera locations and explaining their purpose.
