Democratic presidential candidate Joe Lieberman on Tuesday called for the investment of billions of federal dollars in nanotechnology.
"The government needs to invest in nanotechnology in a big way to plant the seeds of the next boom," says Lieberman, a U.S. senator from Connecticut.
Lieberman spoke after a tour of Nanosys Inc., a Palo Alto, Calif.-based nanotech company that's developing nanotech materials that could be used in semiconductors and solar energy cells, among other things.
Nanotechnology refers to the ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules, making it possible to build machines using molecular building blocks or create materials and structures from the bottom up by designing properties to control structure.
