December 6, 1995
Dear Mr. Egan:
This is a short response to your letter of December 6, 1995 to me, your previous letter to me, and your company's ad in the Austin American-Statesman claiming "outright lies" by an environmental group that was clearly referring to the Save Our Springs Legal Defense Fund.
You make several charges of "outright lies," "malicious and malevolent distortions of the truth," and state "prior charges [made against Freeport] were inaccurate and false." However, not once have you ever identified the specific statements to which you are referring. Nor have you provided any evidence to us regarding the inaccuracy or untruthfulness of any such specific statement.
If you would be so kind as to identify those specific statements you believe that I have made or have been made by the Save Our Spring Legal Defense Fund which are inaccurate or false, and provide the information you believe shows their inaccuracy, then I would be glad to evaluate and respond to those specific matters. If you are unable to do so, then I have to regard your charges against me and the SOS Legal Defense Fund to be lies, falsehoods and distortions.
While I do not believe it worthwhile to delve into too many specifics, I would point out that Bishop Munninghoff's November 22, 1995 statement simply states that his report is not about Freeport and does not contain accusations regarding Freeport. It does not exonerate Freeport it simply states that the Bishop did not investigate Freeport's role in the human rights abuses beyond the reported use of Freeport facilities by Indonesian military.
Also, please note that we do not appreciate being threatened by you or your company. Such harassment is clearly uncalled for. Perhaps we could best resolve these issues and help interested members of the public understand these issue through a public debate. Along these lines, I invite Mr. Moffett, you or any other Freeport representative to a public debate at your earliest convenience.
Finally, thank you for sending me the tape of Bishop Munninghoff. I would very much appreciate your forwarding to me the entire, unedited tape of the interview with Bishop Munninghoff. If the tape that you sent is not edited, perhaps you might explain why the camera operator did not keep the tape running the entire time the Bishop is speaking.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, William G. Bunch, Chief Legal Counsel, Save Our Springs legal Defense Fund
